I came across this gallery by chance. Its a gallery displaying and selling handicraft made by prisoners. The quality for the price sold is top notch. Located at Lot 1320, Jalan Hospital, Kuantan. Tel : 09 513 1451. The place is not easy to spot, so be on the look out.
My pride gallery. The place is run by the jabatan penjara malaysia (malaysian prison department and the PIC Tuan Azaha is most welcoming and knowledgeable about the products and it's origins. According to him, profit is at a bare minimum of RM20.00 per item after only deducting the actual cost of purchasing the raw materials to produce the product. Hence, you are getting a good bargain. profits goes to the prisoners. This is one way of providing the required skills to the prisoners, making them independent once their prison tenure ends. Therefore, they will not need to depend on their family for support and the stigma attached, once they leave prison as now they have the required skills to work on their own.
Tuan Azaha also informed that the prisoners involved in producing the craft are trained by experts in the industry. That is why their products are of high quality with low prices
